Join us for a unique evening at the Surfing Heritage & Culture Center (SHACC) as they unveil “Blue Glass,” a new exhibit honoring the enigmatic surf photographer Ron Stoner. Long celebrated as surfing’s first true visual poet, Stoner’s work profoundly captured the essence of 1960s surf culture, helping to define its golden era.
This special exhibit will feature stunning, recently discovered images from the Stoner family and his former girlfriend Paulette Martinson Auster, many of which have never been published before. Alongside these fresh insights, you’ll also see his most iconic works from the pages of SURFER Magazine, including his impressive run of six consecutive SURFER covers in 1967-68.
Ron Stoner’s artistry transcended typical surf photography, picking up “shades and hues that everyone else missed,” as noted by Encyclopedia of Surfing’s Matt Warshaw. Renowned surf photographer Jeff Divine attests, “Before Ron, most guys just sat on the beach… Stoner was the first real professional. He did it all, and he did it really, really well.”
To delve deeper into the man behind the myth, SHACC will host an intimate panel discussion featuring:
